In short it's that it's caused my a microbial symbiotic relationship.
1) First let's look at the process by which a vampire is created, you either have an infection of vampire blood following a catastrophic loss of blood, or you have a near death draining of the blood then a replacement by feeding infected blood. Either way the element of removal of blood and then replacement of blood. He vampire microbe in question cannot survive an encounter with the body's own immune system so it requires a near complete removal of the white blood cells and infection before they can replenish, or the gradual suppression of the immune system by bleeding, and rebreeding. This allows the microbe the chance to begin "re-writing" the DNA. This process begins with the most immediately infected tissues those of the mouth, esophagus and the upper digestive tract. The stomach becoming the incubator for the microbes that will continue the process through out the entire body of the new host.
2) The vampires great strength and healing abilities. The altered vampire circulatory system functions more like a plant than an animal. Constant positive pressure forces the blood from the stomach not the heart through every blood vessel. The alters capillary response then cuts off blood supply instantly when a nearby portion of tissue becomes damaged. Great strength is not really all that great the microbe own sense of survival short circuit's the hosts instinct for self preservation. So the vampire will exercise strength and agility based on the endurance of the materials of the body rather than holding back to avoid injury. This is one of the only true advantages to the relationship for the host, followed by the ability to regenerate and long life.
3) the ability to regenerate. The Altered vampire cell functions like a omnipotent stem cell every cell contains a complete DNA copy of the whole organism an will if enough sustenance is available reproduce the entire organism from a few cells. This complete regeneration would be nearly impossible to achieve as it then would come into conflict with the microbes only native form of self protection.
4) The greatly extended life span of the vampire. This is again achieved largely due to the more plant like aspect of the altered vampire host. The vampire cells will continue to regenerate as long as a nourishment is available.
Every symbiotic relationship has it's down side for the host as well. Hear let's examine some of those.
1) the destruction of the vampire by exposure to sunlight. Like many microbial forms of life the vampire microbe is fatally vulnerable to ultraviolet light. The microbes only native form of self preservation is to encyst, or to very rapidly generate a hard protean shell around it's nucleus. As every cell in the Hosts body will eventually become a variously functioning exact copy of every other cell, when this occurs the connection and cooperation of the various cells of the body becomes impossible and the entire form, (or those parts exposed) will disintegrate. This happens very quickly and is accompanied by a shedding of the water contained in the body as steam. This would appear to be caused by a heatless fire, giving the impression of the vampire burning away rapidly.
2) the destruction of the vampire by various human methods such as stakes through the heart, fire, injury from silver implements, holy water, crosses and fire. This marks the greatest flaw in the vampire microbes evolution. While a wonder of evolution the microbe relies almost entirely on the hosts sense of self preservation, in all matter except those mentioned previously. All the above noted methods of destroying the vampire rely principally on the "Host's" belief that they will kill it thus triggering the final encysting process. In short if the person who becomes the vampire believes holy water will kill it,..,it will. It should noted that the altered circulatory system is centered on the stomach not the heart. The heart in the completely altered host acts as a priming pump to reestablish positive pressure after feeding or reproduction. So a steak through the heart should not in almost any case be fatal in and of itself. A catastrophic injury to the stomach coupled with a injury to the mouth blocking the ability to feed can be fatal.
Finally with all the advantages to be had from the symbiotic relationship the host gets scant chance to truly enjoy the long life and increased agility and strength. The vampire needs to feed often and the hosts natural senses of empathy and regard are subverted by a bloodlust that is only slackened at the moment after feeding. The vampire only has the ability to enjoy being a vampire for a few minutes a day in it's long life the rest of the time it merely exists to feed and reproduce, much like all predators
